Altamonte Springs is a sleepy little suburb in Seminole County, Florida. It is in northern Orlando and forms part of the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Area. As of 2007, Altamonte Springs had an estimated population of 40,613 residents. It is centrally located in the state and provides easy access to Tampa on the west coast and Daytona to the east. Altamonte Springs is named for all of the spring fed lakes in this area of central Florida.
Altamonte Springs became a popular winter escape with wealthy northerners as far back as the late 1800s. It was also a favorite destination for those with various illnesses who would come to seek the healing powers of the local springs and wonderful weather.
From those early beginnings, Altamonte Springs has grown into the retail hub for Seminole County and central Florida. Retail centers in Altamonte Springs include, Altamonte Crossing, Altamonte Mall, The Gateway Crossing, The Marketplace at Altamonte, Oak Grove Shoppes, Renaissance Center, Uptowne Altamonte and West Town Corners.
Schools in Altamonte Springs are wonderful and have low student teacher ratios of about 18:1. Year after year, they receive higher than average reviews from parents and students scores are consistently higher than in other parts of Florida and the U.S. In addition, there are several top colleges and universities in this area including the Altamonte Springs Community College, Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College, the University of Central Florida and the Webster University Graduate School of Business.
The average household income in Altamonte Springs is higher ($46,292) than the state average and the cost of living is slightly lower making this area especially attractive to those relocating to the central Florida area. Another boon is that the unemployment rate is lower than the national average and the crime rate is lower than other areas of Florida. All these facts are attractive to new residents in the area and are making Altamonte Springs one of the preferred bedroom communities for the greater Orlando area.
